Item details

Based mainly on his own account, this is a life dramatisation of eighteenth century Scotland's most colourful character. In one simple, permanent set the action embraces Aberdeen harbour (where he was kidnapped), the slave market of Philadelphia, captured by Red Indians and escape back through the French and Indian War to the couthy candour (and otherwise!) of a Scottish courtroom. The first act is sheer Fennimore-Cooper -- with a Scottish slant; the second a hilarious litigation against the local council. The epilogue deals with Williamson's life in Edinburgh. It is the portrait of a truly remarkable man, with plenty of scope for doubling in a wide range of characters. Copious notes are included for ease of production.
