Lena Sheehy is a women in her seventies, living in New York, in 1912. A young reporter forces her to recall that she was once the notorious Madeleine Smith, tried for poisoning her French lover Emile L'Angelier, in Glasgow, in 1857. The events leading up to her trial, and the trial itself are recreated in Lena's mind. The play offers an original and dramatic solution to the mystery of who killed Emile L'Angelier, but at the fall of the curtain, Lena the survivor of these long past events, keeps her secret still. There are 18 speaking parts in the play, but many roles are meant to be doubled. The play won the Grace Hunter Trophy in THE 1983 S.C.D.A. One Act Festival.
