Item details

The play concerns the efforts of Abner P. Shakespeare (Groucho Marx) to win an award for presenting the first production at the de Birnam Institute - a newly built theatre erected by the widow of the wood-pulp millionaire, Herman de Birnam. Abner is aided in his enterprise by two budding actors, Charlie and Hamish Renaido (Chico and Harpo Marx). Between the three of them, they present Macbeth using Mrs. de Birnan, her friend the irascible impresario Herr Freitag and even the audience to help them. The play is an affectionate homage not only to the Marx Brothers, but also to William Shakespeare.
