Item details
With the collapse of the communist system throughout Eastern Europe, Robert Kemp's play about the corruption of Stalinism (based on a short story by Walter Duranty) acquires new relevance, portraying, as it does, a period in history that we forget at our peril. The setting is the office of the secret police chief in an unnamed satellite country. Zubof, a once-idealistic agronomist, is forced to face reality when Galkin, the evil secret police chief, falls ill. The Party orders Zubof to replace him, and his first job is to organise the execution of those he loves. He is redeemed, and the play ends with an exciting escape.
