Item details

In the year 1605, Sir John Elphinston, Provost of Glasgow, and his Town Council, were in a curious dilemma. Despite all the efforts no one could be found to take the post of hangman with the result that the Tolbooth prison was becoming rather over-crowded. The Provost solved the problem by offering the post to one of the condemned men who accepted it in return for a free pardon. The Author has based his play on this unique historical incident and has provided some excellent character studies together with a nice balance between comedy and drama.
