Item details

Lizzie, an old woman living in the depths of poverty, feels she is dying, so wishes to bequeath her belongings to her friends and sends Maggie, a young woman who has been very good to her, to fetch them, in order to bequeath her possessions by word of mouth. They come, make a great fuss of Lizzie, and pretend to be delighted with their legacies, but are more interested in the money which they believe Lizzie has hidden away. Lizzie falls back exhausted, and, presuming she is dead, they search for the money - unsuccessfully. Angrily they leave after stripping the house of nearly everything but Lizzie foils them in the end - at least as regards the money. A very strong play with great scope for good acting but relieved with touches of humour throughout.
