Autumn, 1760. Two Glasgow Tobacco Lords wage a continuing feud; both compete, for example, for the custom of a visiting Indian nabob. One of them, however, finds additional worries when his daughter falls in love with an exciseman. His maidservant makes arrangements to take care of everyone, however, including her master. This musical version of James Scotland's first play has lyrics by the author and music by Arthur Blake. It has been presented at two Edinburgh Festivals, in 1958 and 1969, and a radio version, broadcast by the B.B.C. in 1957, featured Duncan Macrae; it was repeated ten years later as a tribute to the star.
