Laura and Randolph Campbell are preparing for an important dinner party, having arranged that Laura's elderly father, Mr. McDonald, will be out for the evening. However, the old man has other plans, and his efforts to gatecrash the party turn a sophisticated evening into a kind of modern Glencoe. The intervention of a well-meaning outsider only serves to add to the frustrations of the young couple. This is situation comedy with plenty of scope for stage "business'', but the play is also a sympathetic look at the problems of having a loved but difficult elderly parent sharing one's home.
