The Board of Glenshoogle Parish Church meets to discuss the usual Adam, a local Justice of the Peace, is visited unexpectedly by his superior, the Sherif, on the morning of a court-day.
The case to be heard is one of housebreaking and damage to a daughter's reputation as well as to a precious family heirloom. Adam, wily and quickwitted old rascal though he is, cannot in the end avoid the suspicious and condemnation of his neighbours, but the many shifts and arguments to which he resorts in his attempts to avert calamity add entertainment to a well-knit plot and result in a play which is unusually satisfying to actors and audience alike.
