Set in (Library)/Study in an 18th century Scottish House.

William Adam is absolute master in all his business a?airs, but he has problems at home. His sensible wife keeps his feet firmly on the ground when his enthusiasm for building threatens to run away with him. His effete younger son, James, shows all the symptoms of turning into a soft Englishman. Only his daughter, Peg, treats him with proper respect and even her planned surprise for his birthday rouses his anger rather than his delight. Adam is seen as a man obsessed with a vision but with a human frailty that reveals an element of drama and even tragedy behind the play's hilarity.
